How Green Canopy catches shadow IT before it fractures a client's data

How an outsourced CIO firm used browser-layer visibility to surface unsanctioned apps and AI tools inside client environments, then shut down the risk before sensitive data walked out the door.

    Before it fractures growth
    Catching shadow IT

As one Green Canopy client added offices across the country, browser-level visibility let Reinert catch shadow IT before it could fracture the client's data, architecture, and workflows.

    In the stack
    2 years running

Atakama has been a standing recommendation in Green Canopy's outsourced-CIO security stack since Reinert discovered it at DattoCon 2024.

    Browser activity
    Zero to full visibility

Browser activity that used to show up as a blank cloud on the network diagram is now fully visible, including logins, applications, and AI tool usage.

"With Atakama, we finally see where people are going and what they're logging into, whether the password is secure, and whether they should be logging into that thing at all."

    About

At Green Canopy Digital Solutions, Michael Reinert and his team work with growing service companies to understand how their business actually operates: how jobs move from the field to the office, where information gets lost, and where things slow down. From there, Green Canopy builds one clear system that brings it all together, designed around how the team already works. The result is a clearer, steadier operation: one where field and office stay connected, work moves smoothly, and teams can focus on getting things done instead of working around the system.

Reinert built Green Canopy, originally Reinert Consulting Group, as an outsourced-CIO practice rooted in industrial water treatment, and has since expanded into other service-based industries. He often works alongside MSPs rather than as one himself.

    The blind spot

    Challenge

What happens beyond the firewall stays invisible without the right visibility layer in place.

Reinert built Green Canopy to operate at the executive strategy and budgeting level, then work down into IT decisions, work that complements the hands-on technical and day-to-day support MSPs already provide their clients. Even with that vantage point, one blind spot persisted for years: once traffic left the internal network, it became, in Reinert's words, just a cloud on the diagram. As SaaS and cloud applications multiplied, that cloud got more crowded, but no less invisible.

Reinert had believed he had a complete security stack for the clients he serves as outsourced CIO, until he realized there was no way to see what was actually happening inside that cloud: which applications employees were logging into, whether passwords were secure, and whether a given login was for business or personal use.

"I thought I had a complete security stack for my co-managed clients, and it hadn't really sunk in yet to me what it was. Then a light bulb went on, and I went, that's the way you see what's going on in that little cloud in our network diagram."

For the MSPs Green Canopy works with, this level of visibility is crucial. As a client's needs evolve, it's easy for a piece of essential coverage to go unnoticed. Reinert's role as an outsourced CIO is to catch that kind of gap early and help make sure clients get what they actually need, working alongside the MSP rather than around it.

    Browser-level visibility

    Solution

Browser-level visibility becomes a valuable addition to Green Canopy's security recommendations, and something extra the MSPs it partners with can offer clients.

Reinert first came across Atakama, a browser security platform, at DattoCon 2024, and it clicked: this was how to see what was actually happening in that blank cloud on his network diagrams.

Once deployed, Atakama showed Green Canopy what had been invisible before: the applications people were using, whether a login was personal or work related, and where passwords were weak. That same blind spot, Reinert points out, is just as capable of hiding unauthorized AI use as it is a risky login.

Reinert points to a client that grew very rapidly, adding multiple offices around the country, each bringing its own tools, systems, and working habits. Even with a solid enterprise architecture in place at the outset, the more the client scaled, the more shadow IT crept in behind the scenes.

"One of our customers grew very rapidly. They started to get multiple offices around the country, and they all come from their own cultures and their own working identities. Even though we started with a good enterprise architecture, once you add in shadow IT, because you don't know about all the SaaS applications, your architecture fractures, your data fractures, and your workflows fracture."

This kind of visibility ties into a core part of Reinert's philosophy as an outsourced CIO: untracked SaaS and AI tools scatter a company's data across disconnected silos, undermining the single source of truth he argues is necessary for real AI-driven workflow analysis. Atakama works as the visibility layer that lets Green Canopy catch that fragmentation before it compounds, rather than finding out only after a client has outgrown its own architecture.

    The outcome

    Results

Browser visibility strengthens Green Canopy's outsourced-CIO recommendations, and gives the MSPs it partners with another way to add value for clients.

With Atakama in place, Reinert can evaluate a client's security posture against what the client actually needs, work that complements the service tiers MSPs already offer. That capability has directly shaped how he engages: browser visibility is now a standing part of any stack he reviews.

"I have to know this to be a proper CIO... So it's just a must."

Michael Reinert · Founder, Green Canopy Digital Solutions

Reinert has used findings surfaced through Atakama to help multiple MSPs make the case for upselling coverage that clients didn't previously realize they were missing. For the businesses and MSPs Green Canopy advises, that same visibility surfaces policy violations, shadow AI use, and risky personal logins earlier, giving them evidence for more strategic conversations with clients about security and AI readiness, on top of the day-to-day support they already provide.

"MSPs already have a hard job. But if you want to keep adding value for clients, you need to know what's happening at the browser level too."
